This 118-page paperback booklet is the biography of a fighter pilot who became a psywarrior during the Korean War. However, it is mostly USAF strategic PSYOP theory against the USSR and has no real data on the Korean War.

A 6-page booklet that unsuccessfully attempts to evaluate the leaflets dropped by aircraft in northwest Europe from 1944-1945 compared with other propaganda media.

A well illustrated exhibition catalogue of leaflets mainly of WWII but also from WWI to Vietnam.

Baldus, Wolfang: SCHWARZE POST (Two volumes), Munich, Germany, 1997.
A privately printed pair of books in the German language. They discuss and illustrate all the propaganda in the form of stamps, postcards, and letter sheets from WWI to the present. They are designed for the philatelic specialist, but contain information of interest to all psywar collectors.

Baldwin, R.E.: LAST HOPE - THE BLOOD CHIT STORY. Schiffer Military History, Atglen, PA, 1997.
This book is on the subject of blood chits, and gives the background of the government’s attempt to provide flyers with a means to escape enemy capture. It shows numerous American leaflets used to instruct local natives how to return flyers to allied lines.

Balfour, Michael: PROPAGANDA IN WAR 1939-1945. Routledge and Kegan, London, 1979.
A history of the organizations, policies and themes of propaganda used on their own population by the governments of Great Britain and Germany. No illustrations. A brief look at what the propaganda ministries were saying month by month.

Batty, Peter PAPER WAR: Nazi propaganda in one battle, on a single day, Cassino, Italy, May 11, 1944, Mark Batty, 2005.
A 63-page full-color illustrated book depicting 17 leaflets that the author picked up on one day on the Italian front during WWII. All leaflets are translated.

Berger, Carl: AN INTRODUCTION TO WARTIME LEAFLETS. American University, 1959.
Eight chapters with illustrations originally written for the Special Operations Research Office (SORO) of American University in an attempt to review and evaluate the wartime use of propaganda leaflets during WWII and Korea.

Bhatt, Dr. Arunkumar, Psychological Warfare and India, Lancer Publishers, New Delhi, India, 2006.
This 357-page sparsely-illustrated book was originally Dr. Bhatt’s PhD treatise. It is an excellent review of psychological warfare in general, with the last 100+ pages being devoted to some extent on India and its enemies.

Blankenhorn, Heber: Adventures in Propaganda: Letters from an Intelligence Officer in France, Houghton Mifflin and Co., Boston and New York, 1919.
The letters from an American WWI propagandist to his wife Mary at home. The letters are censored so not as complete as they might otherwise be. Very few propaganda comments, mostly the author’s views of wartime
France.

Although the book is the history of Special Forces military operations in Afghanistan, several leaflets are depicted and there are a small number of short passages that describe psychological operations.

A 144-page paperback booklet heavily illustrated with Iraq and Afghanistan leaflets. Unfortunately, no new data. The authors state, “All the material in this publication has been collected on the Internet.” They should have stated that in the advertisement.

Bunker, Stephen: SPY CAPITAL OF BRITAIN – BEDFORDSHIRE’S SECRET WAR 1939-1945, Bedford Chronicles, 2007.
This 238-page, heavily illustrated book was sponsored by the Bedford Borough Council Town Hall, and is a tourist’s guide to the various wartime agencies, military encampments, espionage and propaganda schools, printing plants, radio stations and air bases located in or near Bedford. There are many anecdotes about psywarriors, but no actual campaigns or operations.

A 187-page report is heavily illustrated with leaflets for Vietnam and presents a method for pre-testing newly developed leaflets and estimating their potential effectiveness.

A 64-page collection of leaflets, notes and drawings by a British officer during one day of the Battle of Cassino.

Campbell, John Martin. SLINGING THE BULL IN KOREA, Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Press, 2010. 178-page heavily-illustrated hardback book.
A look at the Air Force Units involved in psychological operations during the Korean War. about 50 leaflet images, but the newly commissioned lieutenant author arrived in Korea late and had little actual hands-on experience. Mostly comments about his travels and units he visited.

Campbell, John R.: ARE WE WINNING? ARE THEY WINNING?, Author House, Bloomington, IN, 2004.
This 150-page illustrated paperback book describes the use of Allied Armed Propaganda Teams in Vietnam. There is some mention of various psychological warfare campaigns.

Carty, Pat, SECRET SQUADRONS OF THE EIGHTH, Ian Allen Ltd., London, 1990.
112 pages, heavily illustrated book on the American Eighth Air Force in Britain. One 43-page chapter entitled “The mouth of Psywar” discussing PSYOP and depicting some leaflets.

Chandler, Robert W. WAR OF IDEAS: THE US PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN IN VIETNAM. Boulder, CO: Westview Press, 1981.
Probably the best reference on propaganda of the Viet Nam war. Heavily illustrated, close to 100 translations.

Chin-hsing, Huang and Ying-leu, Chen. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE THEORIES AND APPLICATION, Chi Hsing Press, Hong Kong, 1953.
257 pages, no illustrations. This book was translated from Chinese and the text is very stilted and sometimes incorrect. It was apparently backed by Taiwan and is very political and anti-Communist.

Clark, Allen B. VALOR IN VIETNAM: CHRONICLES OF HONOR, COURAGE AND SACRIFICE: 1963-1977, Casemate Publishers, Philadelphia, PA, 2012.
A book of short stories on the Vietnam War, two of which tell the stories of American PSYOP officers. No PSYOP operations, just general comments on day-to-day activities.

Cummings, Richard H.: COLD WAR RADIO: THE DANGEROUS HISTORY OF AMERICAN BROADCASTING IN EUROPE, 1950-1989, McFarland and Company, Jefferson NC and London, 2009.
This book explores the history of American covert broadcasts by Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty against the Soviet-bloc countries. It details some American leaflet campaigns and documents many of the East-bloc attempts to infiltrate or destroy the radio stations and murder or kidnap the employees.

A description of the psychological warfare leaflets prepared and used against the Japanese Army during WWII. It contains only 18 illustrations, all in black and white. Compared to most books on this subject, the text is very academic. However, it will be a valuable asset to those who specialize in propaganda against the Japanese Army.

The USAF paid for this book that tells the story of the special operations from Korea to Vietnam. Heavily illustrated, it does have some minor mentions of PSYOP campaigns. However, the book is mostly a military record of operations.

A well-produced full-color 180-page book that shows all the invasion currency produced by Japan during WWII. In addition it contains correspondence on Allied counterfeits and images of propaganda leaflets in the form of banknotes, many from my collection.

The story of Sir William Stephenson, who ran British propaganda campaigns against Germany from his headquarters in New York City.
This book was written when information on the subject was still closely guarded by the British Offical Secrets Act. The British government commissioned Hyde to write it in reaction to the escape to the Soviet Union of spy Kim Philby, in an effort to blunt the effect of any disclosures about Stephenson's activities in America.

An excellent review of psychological warfare during the Korean War. It is one of the best research reports on the war that I have read. Well written and extremely well referenced. Available at the Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks, PA.

A bit disappointing. An excellent biography of Charles Bavier, but propaganda is not mentioned for the first 200 pages. When it is, the subject is just lightly touched upon. There is not much for the PSYOP student.

Molnar, Charles J. MOLNAR'S Catalogue. Charles J. Molnar was an American dealer who produced an extensive illustrated sales catalogue of many leaflets, particularly of the Far East. Undated but circa 1965.

Morioka, Michiyo: AN AMERICAN ARTIST IN TOKYO – FRANCES BLAKEMORE – 1906-1997, the Blakemore Foundation, Seattle, WA.
This book is a biography of the American artist Frances Blakemore, but there is a 29-page section that depicts in full color the propaganda leaflets she drew during WWII for the Office of War Information in Honolulu.

Morris, Robert. NO WONDER WE ARE LOSING: The Bookseller, NYC, NY, 1958.
A biography that slightly mentions the author's time as a naval PSYWAR officer on Guam and Saipan during WWII. No illustrations. Perhaps 25 pages that mention psychological operations.

Müller, Major Thomas A., FROM TROY TO PSYOPS – FACETS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE, Ibidem Verlag, Stuttgart, 2011.
I corresponded with the author regularly during the writing of this book. It is a German-language, highly illustrated history of PSYOP written by a Swiss officer. 358 pages, 34 pages of B&W illustrations, paperback.

The author studies the music preferred by American soldiers in Iraq. There is a single chapter on music as a psychological tactic that discusses its use in military motivation and its use in interrogation.

This book was written by the head of an Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) Cell who weekly published “What’s the Word on the Streets of Baghdad?” for the American leadership. It has little technical detail, but does cover the customs of the Iraqis he met and many of the rumors circulating in Baghdad in 2003-2004.

This book contains a heavily edited history of MACVSOG during the first years of it’s existence in Vietnam. It would be a valuable resource, except that 11 of the 12 pages on psychological operations have been deleted.

This is a big coffee-table book; 443 pages and heavily illustrated. It explores the British WWII use of clandestine or “black” products against the Axis powers. An excellent reference, the best on the subject.

Richards, Lee. WHISPERS OF WAR: Psywar.Org, 2010.
This 236-page paperback book lists about 1500 of the 8,000+ underground propaganda rumors prepared by the British during WWII and disseminated in Europe as part of a “whisper campaign.” The rumors are broken up into sections so a specific theme such as “Secret Weapons” is easy to locate.

The first volume is a general look at wartime OSS operations, with emphasis on activities in the United States.

A series of documents on the foundation and activities of the Indian National Army. One section is on INA psychological warfare. Nothing specific on leaflets.

Snyder was a member of a Tactical PSYOP Team supporting the U.S. Marines in Iraq. 253 pages with no illustrations. An excellent biography of what it is like to be a PSYOP team member, but lacks detailed information about psychological operations.

A very well written thesis on the history of U.S. Propaganda against Japan. It reads smoothly and the author covers almost every aspect of our propaganda campaign in the Pacific. Available at the Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks, PA.

Although this book is actually on the subject of Japanese occupation currency in Malaya, it contains sections on airdropped currency, propaganda overprints, propaganda matchbooks, and a 21-page section on propaganda leaflets with over a dozen shown in full color. There is not much new information for the expert, but there are numerous illustrations, which are interesting and informative.

This very detailed Operation Plan (OPLAN) contains about 200 different themes to be used specifically on soldiers, civilians, intellectuals, farmers, students, workers, party members, etc.
